In Ireland, people still speak of the hero Fionn mac Cumhail (Finn MacCool) as though his adventures had taken place only a few generations ago. Strange and wondrous tales are told of him, how, with his fearsome band of followers, the Fianna, he built the Giant's Causeway in a night; how he married a Faery Woman and how he came to taste the flesh of the Salmon of knowledge.

Contention still rages over the historicity of Fionn and the Fianna. Some hold them to be entirely mythical, a product of oral tradition and folk-lore, others say that Fionn was the historical captain of the warriors of King Cormac mac Art, High King of Ireland from 227-266 A.D.
