Additional Details

  • Step by step:
    • Look through the MLPS Positioning Camera in the Scene Tab to place the projector exactly where you want the material preset to be projected. Both the projector and the spotlight inside the projector are parented to that camera and will move with it. What you see through that camera is exactly what will be projected into your render.
    • To choose a material preset, the “Marshian Projector Iray” must be selected in the scene tab. The projector is parented to the MLPS positioning camera. Note: some material presets come pre-loaded with an opacity mask.
    • If you can’t clearly see the material preset you’ve selected when looking through the positioning camera, un-check “Preview Lights” under “Window.” Now do an AuxViewport render to check projected image placement and light intensity.
  • Fine tuning:
    • The projector is the size of a standard square photography soft-box (~1 meter square). It will fit into just about any space from a wide open field to a small bedroom. If you want to use the projector in a very tight space, scale the camera (with parented projector/spotlight) down to fit just about anywhere. This is also the way to project one of the material presets on very small area, like a symbol on the forehead or the chest of a character.
    • Depending on the material preset that you select and the distance from the subject, you may have to adjust the parented spotlight’s lumen to get the best results from that preset. We have attempted to standardize this, but the variety of material presets that come with the projector mean that some adjustment may be necessary.
    • Turning the lumen output too high can cause some light to spill out of the projector and that may show up in your render, especially in very dark scenes with reflective surfaces.
    • In our tests we have found no significant increase in render times between the MLPS projector and the standard Daz spotlight.
    • Although you can see exactly where the material preset will be projected by using the view mode of the MLPS camera, use of the aux viewport (Nvidia mode) is highly recommended when placing the projector.
    • You may want to adjust the environment intensity and the environment map levels to produce the amount of light you want to fill in the shadow areas. For a more realistic effect, use an environment map (Environment tab/type/backdrop) or HDR image that closely matches the colors of the material preset you’re using. This is another situation where the aux viewport is very useful. However, some interesting effects can be achieved by selecting an environment map that has totally different color(s) than the material preset you’ve chosen.
  • Keep in mind:
    • The projector itself will render. Unless you plan to erase it from your render in your photo editing program, keep it out of the render area. Adjusting the focal length of your render camera (even just a tiny amount) is another way to get the projector out of your render without drastically altering your render’s composition. The front of the projector does emit a slight glow. This glow and any reflections from it will show up in a render. You may not want to not point the projector directly at the render camera.
    • Position the render camera at least 12 inches from the surface that has a projection on it. Moving it closer than this can cause a slight mesh pattern to appear on the surface.
  • Further exploration:
    • Experiment with changing the color of the spot light for some interesting effects.
    • Experiment with scaling the X and Y axis of the projector for some interesting effects. This is a great way to finely tune the image that is projected.
    • Experiment with changing the geometry of the spotlight (Parameters Tab / height and width) to change the projected image from crystal clear to blurry.
  • About the preset “Families”:
    • Opacity masks- You can add any one of the opacity masks to soften the edge of your projection. Note: there are a variety of opacity mask presets for the projector and some will black out more of the projected image than others. Play around with the different shaped masks to get the effect you desire.
    • Landscape and architectural silhouettes- For the most realistic effect when using the landscape silhouette presets, place the projector behind camera and in line with it. However, you may want experiment with placing the projector at various angles for some really interesting (non-real world) effects. Remember that the light is mimicking the sun in most cases so position the projector closer to the ground where the sun would be in the evening or morning.
