When plate armor became more common, the sword had to evolve to match. The one handed 'knightly' sword changed, gaining a longer handle and slightly longer blade, very often shaped to be more efficient with a two-handed thrust. Called a 'bastard sword' or 'hand and a half' sword by some, and a 'longsword' by others, these weapons were swords of war, and both the crafting and the use of these weapons was an art in and of itself.
