A young boy remembers that there is a small shrine near his grandparents' house. There was an old big drum there. He was able to use it freely and was fascinated by its deep bass sound. That drum was a Nagado-daiko, which is a type of Wadaiko. Wadaiko is a general term for Japanese drums. He grew up a little and joined a local club of Jin-daiko. Jin-daiko was a performance of Wadaiko to encourage the morale of soldiers. Today, they entertain people at rituals and festivals.

It is unknown when this simple percussion began to be used as a musical instrument. It is said Wadaiko was used as a signal to wide areas and had been once used to encourage the morale of Samurai soldiers in the Sengoku period.

Recent Wadaiko performances may be accompanied by powerful gestures for more brave staging. And Japanese taste costumes are also essential for such performances.
