Weight Map Editing Operations

Summary

Actions which work with polygon selections to edit weight map values contained within the selection, or actions which indirectly edit weight map behavior.

Previously assigned polygon selections can be used, or temporary selections can be created using the Polygon Group Editor Tool.

Fill Selection

Viewport : > right-click menu > Fill Selection 1)
Function : Fills the current polygon selection with a user specified value, replacing any existing values.

Steps :

  1. With an active polygon selection, right-click in the viewport.
  2. Choose Fill Selected Faces.
  3. Specify the weight value to fill with.
  4. Accept.

Smooth Selected Faces

Viewport : > right-click menu > Smooth Selected Faces 2)

Function : Smooths all weight map values within the current polygon selection by averaging against neighboring values.

Options :

  • Smooth Factor : controls the intensity of the resulting smooth effect.
  • Iterations : controls the number of times the smoothing will be repeated.

Steps :

  1. Ordered List ItemWith an active polygon selection, right-click in the viewport.
  2. Choose Smooth Selected Faces.
  3. Specify a smooth factor, and iteration count.
  4. Accept.

Polygon Locking

Main Menu Bar : Window > Tabs > Tool Settings > Options Menu > Polygon Locking 3)
Viewport : > right-click menu > Polygon Locking 4)

Function : Allows the user to lock an active polygon selection, preventing those polygons from being affected by weight map editing functions. This is useful to mask areas of the model from receiving unintentional edits. Locked polygons will shade in dark half-tone to indicate their status as locked.

Options :

  • Lock Selected : locks the active polygon selection.
  • Lock All : locks all polygons on the active model.
  • Unlock All : unlocks all locked polygons on the active model.
  • Invert Locked : inverts the state of locked and unlocked polygons on the active model.

Steps :

  1. With an active polygon selection, right-click in the viewport.
  2. Choose Polygon Locking.
  3. Choose desired locking operation.

Bulge Weight Map Settings

Main Menu Bar : Window > Tabs > Tool Settings 5)

Function : Attached to each bulge weight map are settings which control the extent of their deformation contribution. Under each bulge map entry are Pos (positive) and Neg (negative) sliders which control the strength of the bulge effect when the joint is rotated to positive and negative values. The strength of the effect of these sliders is attenuated by the weight maps they belong to.
