The Saguaro is a tree-like cactus belonging to the single-species genus Carnegiea. It can reach heights of over 12 meters (40 feet) and is native to the Sonoran Desert, which spans parts of Arizona, the Mexican state of Sonora, and areas of California including the Whipple Mountains and Imperial County. Saguaros have notably long lifespans, often living more than 150 years. They typically begin to grow their first side arms between 75 and 100 years of age, though some may never develop any. These arms enhance the cactus’s reproductive ability by increasing the number of growing tips, which produce more flowers and fruit.

The Organ Pipe Cactus is a species native to both Mexico and the United States, typically found in rocky desert environments. Two subspecies are recognized, distinguished by their geographic distribution and height. The Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument takes its name from this species. Cacti, including the organ pipe cactus, are only modestly adapted to specific temperature ranges and are highly sensitive to seasonal rainfall. This species features multiple narrow stems that grow vertically from a short trunk just above the ground. Each stem measures approximately 15 cm (6 in) in thickness and commonly reaches a height of 5 meters (16 ft), though some specimens have been known to grow as tall as 7 to 8 meters (23 to 26 ft).
